DIY: Air Conditioning Maintenance Basics

Posted Jul 25, 2019

Is there anything better than walking into a comfortably chilled place during summer? Beat the heat and keep your Air Conditioning System working by following some simple Do It Yourself steps. These will help you save money over time and eliminate any stress that could lead to system failure.

Don’t take your air conditioning for granted! Do the proper maintenance by following these easy DIY air conditioning tips and keep your cooling equipment safe:

Keep it clean:

Make sure your system is in top-notch shape by giving it a regular cleaning. It’s important to vacuum the fins and coils of the central AC unit on the external compressor/condenser fan. To do this, you can use a soft-bristled brush. Depending on the unit you have, you may need to unscrew the box surrounding the unit

Check for any accumulated dust that may be obstructing the airflow, and inspect the filter which will need to be replaced if it is too dirty.

Coil fins:

Your air conditioning unit’s indoor evaporator coil works as a heat exchanger. The refrigerant inside the coil evaporates as heat is absorbed from the air passing through the system. These coils have fins.

If your coil fins are bent, then the airflow through the coils can be affected. To fix this issue, you can use a hammer while they lie flat on a table, and lightly tap the coils until they are straight again.

If you are having a hard time straighten them, or if they are damaged in any way, contact us and we can send a professional to help you out.

Thermostat:

To improve your central air conditioner efficiency, you should make sure that your thermostat is properly working, otherwise, your electricity bills could suffer. Consider getting your thermostat upgraded if you still have an older model.

The new programmable thermostats enable you to adjust the temperature by remote control which can keep your home comfortable, improve your energy efficiency, and decrease your summer bills. This is also beneficial for split system air conditioners, as you can program each separately depending on the individual room needs.

In-line duct booster:

A duct-booster is a device that you can attach to your heating and cooling system’s ductwork. There are a few advantages in doing this as it increases the flow of cool air into the rooms, helping you chill spaces that always seemed hotter than others.

Please note: This service should only be done by professionals. Give us a call or send us a message, and we can send a technician free of charge for an estimate.

Condensation:

In case the drain tube is clogged, condensation can result in accumulation of liquid around the furnace. Be sure to keep it clean and prevent the formation of bacteria in the system.
