A 20-degree temperature swing in an afternoon makes the furnace cycle on and off repeatedly, and that short-cycling wears out igniters, flame sensors, and control boards faster than you would expect. The city has a large stock of 1960s to 1980s bungalows, and in those homes the single most important check is the heat exchanger. A cracked exchanger in an older furnace can leak combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, into the home, and it is more likely to show up under the hard, sustained running that a Calgary cold snap demands.
